The original kitchen was so small that the refrigerator had to be placed in an adjacent room. The kitchen was expanded by removing the rear brick wall, requiring the installation of two perpendicular steel beams to support the second floor. These were trimmed with wood, becoming a major design feature. The small island provides additional counter space and a prep sink for the two-cook homeowners. A breakfast bar overlooks the back yard.
